In the four-part documentary series FIRE: Early Retirement, seven young people share how they plan to live off their passive income. Not working for money, but making money work for them—that is the FIRE philosophy: Financial Independence, Retire Early.

Financial independence comes in many forms, ranging from an extremely minimalist lifestyle in Ghent to a “sky is the limit” mindset in Dubai. Freedom, stepping out of the rat race, and having full control over their own time – that’s what these twenty-somethings are striving for in this series.

FIRE sounds appealing, but what exactly is it? Is this lifestyle only for the lucky few, or can anyone retire by thirty? Is FIRE just a trend, or is it simply extreme frugality? Is it realistic for everyone? And what are the downsides of achieving financial independence?
